Dear USR Families,
Just a quick reminder that tomorrow is Red, White & Blue Day!
Students and staff are encouraged to participate by wearing red, white, and blue.
We look forward to seeing everyone show their school spirit!

As we begin the 2026–2027 school year, we want to make sure all families are connected to Rooms through the USR Schools app. Rooms is one of the primary ways teachers and schools share messages, announcements, reminders, and important updates with families.
If you have not already done so, please download the USR Schools app, available in the Apple App Store and Google Play. The app makes it easy to receive messages, announcements, reminders, and important updates from the District, your child’s school, and teachers all in one place.
If you’re not yet active in Rooms, you’ll soon receive an invitation in one of the following ways:
Email from accounts@thrillshare.com
Text message from 20819
Here’s what those invitations will look like:

Good afternoon, Parents and Guardians-
We are excited to share an important update regarding a series of leadership appointments and organizational updates that will be brought forward at the Board of Education meeting on May 18. These items reflect thoughtful planning and a continued commitment to strong, steady leadership across our district.
Superintendent
First, the Board will vote on the appointment of Mr. Dave Kaplan, currently serving as Principal of Bogert School and Assistant Superintendent, as the next Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1, 2026. In his role as Assistant Superintendent, Mr. Kaplan has worked closely with district leadership on key initiatives and has benefited from ongoing mentorship under Dr. Schoen, helping to prepare him for this next step. He has been a dedicated and highly respected leader in our district for 23 years, and we look forward to his continued, steadfast leadership in this new role.
Cavallini
In addition, the Board will vote to acknowledge the retirement of Mr. James McCusker, Principal of Cavallini Middle School effective August 17, 2026. Mr. McCusker has devoted 20 years of service to our district, first as Assistant Principal and then as Principal of Cavallini. His thoughtful leadership, commitment to students, and care for the school community have made a lasting impact. We extend our sincere gratitude and wish him all the best in his well-deserved retirement.
As Mr. McCusker transitions into retirement, the Board will also vote on the appointment of Mrs. Salliann Ran, current Assistant Principal of Cavallini, as the next Principal. Over the past two years, Mrs. Ran has demonstrated strong, steady leadership, and we are confident that Cavallini Middle School will continue to thrive under her leadership. We will begin a search process for a new Assistant Principal.
Bogert/Reynolds
The district will move forward with a PreK - 5 school model across the connected Bogert and Reynolds facilities. This model will be led by one Principal and one Assistant Principal, replacing the current structure of two separate Principals and one Dean of Students. This approach allows us to strengthen academic continuity from PreK through Grade 5, ensuring a more consistent and cohesive learning experience for all students. Our incoming Superintendent, Mr. Kaplan, will lead the search process.
These changes have been developed with careful consideration and with the goal of maintaining strong leadership, continuity, and a positive school experience, while also demonstrating fiscal responsibility and ensuring we are aligning our structure with both student needs and community expectations.
These updates also reflect our ongoing commitment to maintaining strong leadership, supporting students and staff, and positioning our district for continued success. We are excited about the opportunities ahead and look forward to building on the strong foundation already in place across our schools.
Sincerely,
C. Lauren Schoen, Ed.D.
Interim Superintendent of Schools
Susan Gandara
USR Board of Education President
