           First Grade

    Language Arts

    First grade is an important part of primary reading success. Students will secure letter sound correspondences and apply these sounds to decode new words. In the resource room, multisensory approaches to learning will be infused to help students reach their full potential. Students will engage in just-right books and learn good reading habits. Your child will read fiction and nonfiction texts, listen and respond to read alouds and learn about the important elements of a text.

    Writing

    In Writing, first graders will learn to compose meaningful sentences to showcase their clever ideas. Throughout the year we will learn to compose readable pieces of writing. Each student will work on their own specific goals throughout different units of study including narrative writing, opinion writing, and nonfiction writing. Student will be sure they have the essential components of writing! We use our SPACE strategy to remember the must-haves in our writing!

    Math

    Students in first grade will be working on the Everyday Math program. Please see the link to the Everyday Math webpage which is a great reference to stay connected with learning in the classroom and play math games regularly at home.

    In addition to homework, here are some important first grade skills to practice at home!

    * Practice adding and subtracting numbers using manipulatives, drawings, or tools.

    * Skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s.

    * Practice writing numbers. Be sure you can read these numbers too!

    * Tell how many tens and ones are in a number.

    * Compare objects of different lengths and measure using non-standard units of measurement (e.g. cubes, paperclips).
