Units of Study:
Reader's
WorkshopThird grade follows the Reader’s Workshop model. Students read many books and explore different genres, authors, and texts. Reader’s Workshop emphasizes the interaction between readers and text. Students learn to ask questions and make connections with prior knowledge and previously read texts. They maintain a Reader’s Notebook that includes notes on post-its and book summaries. The Reader’s Workshop model includes peer conferences and teacher conferences with students. Students are assessed for independent reading levels throughout the school year using Running Records.
Mathematics
Everyday Mathematics is the third-grade mathematics program. Units of study to be covered are: Adding and Subtracting Whole Numbers, Linear Measure and Area, Multiplication and Division, Place Value in Whole Numbers, Geometry, Fractions, and Measurement and Data. Students become involved in mathematical explorations using math manipulatives, games, and math message investigations. Math Boxes in their Student Journal provide review and practice daily.
Science
Our four science modules are Forces and interaction, Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems, Weather and Climate, and Inheritance and Variation of Traits. Students explore, experiment, and learn to use the scientific process through hands-on lessons. Students maintain a lab notebook for each unit of study.
Social Studies
The three units that the students will review over the course of the year are My Town and Me, Social Scientists, and Global Cultures.
Writer's
WorkshopThird grade follows the Writer’s Workshop model. Students establish and maintain a Writer's Notebook throughout the school year. The Writer's Notebook is used to gather ideas for various genres of writing. Writing genres studied are personal narrative, expert book, realistic fiction, personal essay, and informational writing.
Words Their Way
Words Their Way is a phonics, vocabulary, and spelling program. Children learn to look closely at words to compare, contrast, and classify categories of sounds and words. Word meanings are discussed. Students engage in a variety of activities in school and at home to practice their spelling and vocabulary skills.
Handwriting
Students are introduced to the cursive alphabet. At an appropriate time, students make the transition from manuscript to cursive handwriting. They begin to complete selected assignments in cursive.
Technology
Students learn the tools of technology in the lab, in the classroom, and during Tech Media. Word processing skills are developed and reinforced using the program Type to Learn. Students learn how to obtain internet access and research information. They use various programs to link technology to the curriculum. To learn more about technology activities, go to the grade three technology page.
