    Reading Reading

The Reading Workshop is a method that teaches students strategies for reading and comprehension. The full literacy curriculum is designed to meet the different ability levels, needs, and interests of each student. Students choose Just Right Books from classroom leveled libraries and read independently after listening to a strategy lesson. Students are given the opportunity to respond and reflect about what they have read. Partner shares and group discussions are an important part of the Reading Workshop, and it allows students to discuss strategies used in their reading. The teacher reads aloud to model appropriate reading behaviors and strategies. The different components of the workshop give students the chance to work in collaborative partnerships and/or small groups on a daily basis.

The 4th grade reading curriculum includes launching the reading workshop, character study, nonfiction, historical fiction, poetry, and independent reading projects.

The spelling program, Words Their Way, is a developmental approach to phonics, vocabulary, grammar and spelling instruction. Students use the discovery approach by examining, manipulating, comparing and categorizing words. The student’s focus is on the critical features of the words such as sound, pattern, and meaning. Grammar and vocabulary is also carefully and specifically infused as part of the program.
