Classroom Procedures
Absentees
Call x6376 if your child is going to be absent. Notify the school in advance if your child is going to be absent due to a vacation. The Parent/Student Handbook states that "Children absent from school due to vacation are considered unexcused and are not to receive homework in advance."
Birthdays
Invitations can be handed out only if the entire class is invited. Please fill out the birthday letter and send it in prior to your child's birthday. If you would like your child to celebrate his/her birthday in school, please fill out the section below. Although we encourage healthy snacks, you can bring in store bought treats as long as the ingredients and nutritional information is available.
You can drop off the birthday treat at the greeter’s desk before 8:30 AM. Please keep in mind that we usually have snack from 1:05 – 1:20 PM. Snacks that need to be pre-cut or assembled are discouraged, as they will impede upon instructional time. If the treat requires small plates, napkins, and/or utensils, please provide those as well.
We have many health needs in the class. Please make sure that every treat is pre-packaged so that it includes a list of ingredients. (Homemade treats are discouraged since we have many allergies in the class.) Please send me this information the day before the treat is brought into class. You can take a picture of the label with your phone and email it to me at hvega@usrschoolsk8.com. This is to ensure that no child has an adverse reaction. If your child has allergies, please send in a safe snack
Clothing
There will be daily outdoor recess after lunch, weather permitting. Please send your child to school with warm attire during the winter months. Please send them with a thin sweater during the hotter months, as our classroom is air-conditioned. I cannot regulate the temperature in the classroom. Labeling clothing, backpacks, lunch boxes and personal items is strongly recommended. The Lost & Found basket is located near the Greeter's Desk.
Folders
Please check your child's folder every night. Often there are important papers enclosed; not only the child's work, but also important notices from the teacher. The children have been informed that their folders should be emptied nightly, with the exception of returned notices, homework, etc. Notes should be taken out of the folder each night to avoid clutter and confusion. If the folder is lost or ruined, please replace it immediately.
Homework
The primary purpose of homework is to encourage your child to be responsible and to reinforce concepts taught in class. It is important for your child to correctly practice the skills taught in school at home. Please review their homework with them. If your child is having difficulty with the homework, please send it in with a note so that I can review it again in class. Homework is due on Friday. The nightly reading book is considered homework.
Medications
All prescriptions (even cough drops) should be given to the Health Office if taken during school hours.
Signing Out
Please make sure that you sign your child out at the Greeter's Desk if you are picking them up early for any reason.
Snack
Please supply your child with a HEALTHY snack every day, including when ordering lunch and class parties. Also, remember to pack your child with a spoon or fork if one is needed.
Arrival & Dismissal Procedures
Our classroom door will open each day at 7:55. It is important for all children to arrive in a timely manner so that we are able to effectively utilize our instructional time. Any student who arrives after 8:05 will be marked tardy. After 8:15, students must report to the attendance office for a late pass. In order to ensure the safety of your child, please make sure you send a note if there are any changes in your child’s dismissal schedule. If your child is taking an alternate route home one day, please make sure you send a note. Also, if dismissal plans change during the course of the day, please contact the office. DO NOT leave me a voicemail or email me this information, as I will not be able to check these messages till after dismissal. If you plan to have your child exit the school through a different exit (other than our usual Child Study Team exit) or without the supervision of an adult, you must send in a letter detailing your specific dismissal procedures.
Visitation
All visitors must report to the Greeter's Desk to sign in and receive a Visitor's Badge. Please allow extra time for the greeter to scan in your ID and sign you in. If you are dropping off lunch, student work, library books or any other item, leave it at the Greeter's Desk for your child to pick up at a convenient time. This procedure avoids classroom interruptions.
If you have any questions, you can always call, send a note, or email me. My school extension is 2056 or you can email me, hvega@usrschoolsk8.com.Volunteers
There will be many opportunities to volunteer in the classroom during the year. Please sign up at Back To School Night. When you come to volunteer, it is important that you go directly to the Greeter's Desk to sign in and receive a Visitor's Badge. Please make sure you review the Guidelines for Volunteers.
