Math Tips for Parents

Help children see that math is part of everyday life. Let children figure out the sale price for an item they want. Have children add up the bill in a restaurant. Children can compare sports statistics about their favorite players or teams.

Point out the most jobs require math. A chef needs to adapt recipes for a crowd. Computer gamers, store owners and musicians use math to success.

Show how technology and math intersect. Children need to learn to use calculators and computers to succeed in life.

Play games. Board games, such as Hi-Ho Cherrio and Monopoly, require children to count and do mental math.  Hopscotch and jacks use math. Games can help children develop number sense and computational skills.

Be positive about math. Show your children how you use math and that you are comfortable with math.
