Classroom News September 2010 Welcome to third grade! I am looking forward to working with you and your children this year. I would like to explain some of our classroom procedures and familiarize you briefly with the third grade curriculum. 1. Schedule School begins at 8:05 a.m. Attendance is taken at this time and students who arrive after the 8:05 bell will be marked late. The lunch/recess period is 12:20 1:00 daily. Please fill out the applicable paperwork if you would like your child to receive milk for the school year. Bogert runs on a six-day rotating schedule, A - F day. This means that specials will not fall on the same day each week. A monthly calendar is available on the Bogert website with the letter days marked on it so that students can be prepared for each special accordingly. 2. Homework Students will have homework every Monday through Thursday. Homework assignments will be written daily in their assignment books. Please sign your child’s assignment book each night so that you are aware of your child’s responsibilities and are certain all homework is complete. If homework is incomplete or forgotten, a one-day grace period is given to complete the assignment. I will send home a reminder note to complete the assignment. The reminder note is to help your child remember, as well as to make you aware, that an assignment is late. A parent signature is required on the reminder note and is to be attached to the late assignment. If your child has difficulty completing a homework assignment, please send a note or email letting me know.
3. Spelling We are continuing with same spelling program at Bogert School this year called Instructional Level Spelling. Each student will be given a spelling inventory to determine his or her instructional spelling level. Instructional groups will be formed with students who are at similar levels in the development of spelling proficiency. All groups will be studying word lists that share a common phonics/spelling rule but each group’s list will differ in spelling difficulty. All groups will have opportunities for practicing their spelling words through nightly homework assignments. Every Friday your child will have a spelling test on their weekly spelling words.
4. Science Students will be doing hands-on science labs approximately two times in each six-day cycle. We will begin our first module, Ecosystems, within the next couple of weeks. There will be announced quizzes during the unit and an end of unit exam. 5. Social Studies There are three units of study in the third grade curriculum. They are Upper Saddle River, New Jersey, and The Regions of the United States. We will begin our unit on Upper Saddle River within the next couple of weeks. 6. Mathematics Our third grade math program is Everyday Mathematics. “Home Links” will be sent home for homework as a follow up for that day’s lesson. The first unit, “Routines, Review and Assessment,” will help students retrieve past learning in earlier grades. This will promote a stronger foundation for learning new material. Family Letters for each unit are available at the bottom of this page.
7. Reader’s Workshop Third grade is a pivotal transition year from learning to read words, to reading for meaning and comprehension. It is essential for students to read books that are on their reading level, often referred to as “just right” books. Through the Reader’s Workshop model, your child will practice numerous reading skills and will keep their own reader’s notebook to record their reading experiences during the school year.
9. Writer’s Workshop Students will be writing and publishing several informal and formal pieces this year in the Writer’s Workshop. Each student will keep a writer’s notebook that will contain their very own writing ideas and experiments with various writing techniques. Through the school year, we will be writing creative stories, poetry, personal narratives, and other forms of writing. I will be sending home a class list shortly. Please let me know if you do not want your home phone number placed on this list. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to email me at kmurphy@usrschoolsk8.com or call 201-961-6350, ext. 2033. Thank you for your help and support. I look forward to meeting you at Curriculum Night on September 23rd.
