In music class, students explore and experience music by singing, moving, and playing a variety of pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments. A wide variety of hands-on activities are designed to not only develop performance skills, but also to synthesize theoretical knowledge and understanding. Students in Grades 3-5 explore the three main elements of music (rhythm, melody, and harmony) and examine how they work together to create the music that we hear. The fundamentals of reading and writing music notation are introduced in 3rd Grade and developed further in 4th and 5th Grade. The primary goal of the Bogert General Music Program is to help students discover the joy of music making. My hope is that students will leave Bogert School with fond memories of a wide range of musical experiences and a desire to cultivate their interest in music in middle school and beyond.
